NAROWAL: All departments have been alerted to deal with possible flooding due to heavy rains in the district.

Rescue 1122 has set up 22 temporary posts on the banks of the river Ravi and stormwater channels. A control room has been set up in the District Complex for monitoring the situation.

Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Tayyab Khan said one river and four stormwater channels were flowing in the district.

He said due to heavy rains in occupied Kashmir and India, the Ravi discharge was 11,000 cusecs at Kot Ninan, 975 cusecs in Auj stormwater channel, 52 cusecs in Basantar, 176 cusecs in Bayan and 440 cusecs in Dek.

He said all the relevant departments, including Rescue 1122, Civil Defense, Health, Livestock and Agriculture, have been alerted.

PDMA forecasts moderate flooding in Ravi in next 24 hours

According to a forecast by the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), there is a possibility of moderate flooding in the Ravi in the district during the next 24 hours.

The DC said according to the PDMA, heavy rains are expected in the next few days and there is a risk of urban flooding in various areas of Punjab, including Narowal district.

He appealed to citizens to take precautionary measures and avoid going close to electric installations, poles, transformers and broken electric wires. He asked citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.

He said citizens could call Rescue 1122 or the control room established in the District Complex, Narowal, in any emergency.

He said Section 144 had been imposed in district and there was a complete ban on bathing in rivers, canals, drains and ponds.

District Emergency Officer Engineer Aurangzeb said rescue teams were fully prepared to deal with any possible flood situation. He said to protect the lives and property of citizens, Rescue 11 has activated in Code Red in the district.

He said 22 temporary flood rescue posts had been set up at sensitive locations of the Ravi, Basantar, Bayan, Auj and Dek. He said these posts were equipped with trained rescuers, water boats, life jackets and life rings.

He said seven flood rescue posts had been set up in Narowal tehsil, seven in Shakargarh, and five in Zafarwal.
