KARACHI: As a punishing heatwave gripped most districts of Sindh, a new maximum temperature record was set in Dadu on Thursday, with a sizzling 51.5 degrees Celsius, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said.

Previously, the highest temperature recorded in Dadu was 51.4°C on May 18, 2016, the PMD said.

On Friday, temperatures surged to 50°C in four Sindh cities as Dadu and Jacobabad sizzled at 51°C, followed by Shaheed Benazirabad, Larkana and Mohenjo Daro (50°C).

The maximum temperature recorded in Khairpur and Sakrand was 49°C, while Sukkur experienced 48°C.

The maximum temperature in Karachi on Friday was 37°C with 67 per cent humidity.

The Met Office forecast very hot and dry weather in most districts of Sindh during the next 24 hours.

It said maximum Temperatures are likely to remain “04-06°C above normal and may rise to 47-50°C in districts of Sukkur, Shikarpur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Larkana, Mohenjo Daro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tharparkar, Badin, Sujawal, Thatta, Hyderabad, Matiari, Tando Muhamad Khan, Umerkot, Ghotki, Khairpur, Naushehro Feroze, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro and Sanghar.
