ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Tuesday stated that over 2,000 personnel of its Solid Waste Management Directorate, equipped with 200 vehicles and machinery, will perform duties in the special Eidul Azha cleanliness operation.
Chairing a meeting, CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Sohail Ashraf reviewed the Eid related arrangements. The meeting was informed that over 151 pits had been dug at 89 locations to dispose of animal offal. Over 200,000 biodegradable bags are being distributed free of cost in urban and rural areas of Islamabad.
“A door-to-door campaign for distributing biodegradable bags has already been launched by the Solid Waste Management Directorate of CDA,” read a press release issued by CDA.
It said that in line with direction of Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi, a comprehensive cleanliness plan had been finalised for Islamabad.
Capital admin constitutes special cleaning teams for designated points
The meeting was attended by Member Environment Abdullah Khurram Niazi, Director Solid Waste Management, CDA and relevant senior officers of the ICT.
“Relevant officers gave a detailed briefing to Chairman CDA Sohail Ashraf regarding the arrangements and measures taken for Eid-ul-Adha in the Capital. They informed him that, in addition to officers from the CDA Solid Waste Management Directorate relevant Assistant Commissioners will also supervise this special operation.”
Moreover, over 2,000 personnel of the Solid Waste Management Directorate will perform duties.
The city has been divided into five zones to ensure cleanliness arrangements. Chief sanitary inspectors and supervisors will perform special monitoring duties in various zones. Phenyl and lime will also be sprayed to eliminate odor and stench from slaughterhouses and offal.
To make the special cleanliness and sanitation operation successful, citizens have been appealed to cooperate with the sanitation staff by not throwing offal into drains, open spaces, forests, etc., and not put them in dustbins, garbage trolleys, or skips. Legal action will be taken against violations,” said the press release.
The CDA chairman directed that arrangements for scientific disposal of offal should be made by staying in contact with the management committees of all private and cooperative housing societies. A central control room has been established at the Islamabad Safe City H-11 to monitor the cleanliness arrangements for Eidul Azha. CCTV and drone cameras of Islamabad Safe City will also be used to monitor the sanitation operation. Meanwhile, emergency centres have been set up at the Sanitation Directorate’s main office located in G-6/4 and the transport section located at the fire headquarters, G-7/4.

Special cleanliness teams
The capital administration constituted special cleaning teams which will be deployed at designated points for timely disposal of offal.
The administration said the teams will also be deployed at the points where collective sacrifices are being conducted.
The administration held a meeting to review the preparations regarding Eidul Azha. All assistant commissioners briefed the meeting about the preparations, including shifting and disposing of the offal during the three days of the Eid in their respective jurisdictions.
The process of distribution of bags for collecting offal has entered its final stages. Coordination with UC staff and housing societies regarding the cleaninluness campaign has also been completed.
The assistant commissioners also briefed the meeting regarding daily visits to cattle markets. Strict action is being taken against the sale of animals at places other than markets.
Rawalpindi
The civic bodies of the garrison city also chalked out plans for the cleanliness in their respective areas and ensured to clean the city during Eidul Azha.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema along with other district officials visited the control room and offices of Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) to inspect the arrangements for cleanliness.
Deputy commissioner who is chairman of RWMC said that as many as 11,687 workers will perform cleanliness duties starting from one day before Eid and continuing until the third day.
Around 2,823 vehicles will be deployed during the Eidul Azha cleanliness operation.
He said that 73 permanent and 168 mobile transfer stations will be set up in all six districts, including Rawalpindi. For complaint registration, RWMC helpline 1139, control rooms, and special mobile numbers 0316-4801718, 0316-4801719, and 051-9291108 will remain fully active throughout the Eid operation. A team of 54 personnel will be deployed across 22 control rooms to manage operations.
He said that at 135 major collective slaughter points, 497 workers and 206 vehicles will be present.
Handcarts will be made available for collecting waste from narrow streets. Biodegradable waste bags are being distributed for collecting offal. In all 22 tehsils, 45 model camps and 312 Union Council camps will be set up for distributing bags, registering complaints, and raising awareness, he said.
