HYDERABAD: Two students of the Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam, received pellet injuries in firing outside the varsity’s Horticulture Garden on Monday.

It was stated that three students — Sumair Malik, Jamshed Indher and Kamran Malik, from SAU’s Crop Production and Animal Husbandry Faculties — arrived at the garden, along with their guests from Pannu Aaqil, and tried to enter it for taking snaps inside. However, they were denied entry by the security guard posted there.

They were told that the university administration had let out the farm to some contractors for picking mangoes. A heated argument between the students and the guard ensued.

According to the students’ claim, “the security guard called out some armed men over the phone who resorted to firing and also snatched a mobile phone from Sumair”. Jamshed and Sumair received pallet injuries in the firing and were taken to the Liaquat University Hospital (LUH), Hyderabad, for treatment.

A group of charged students held a protest demonstration over the incident after which Hyderabad SSP Shahzeb Chachar assigned an inquiry into the matter to the Baldia DSP.

MLO Dr Imran Abbas Khawaja said that the students had received pellet injuries after gunshots were fired by “the gunmen”. The students’ condition is out of danger, he added.

Tandojam SHO Malik Abro told Dawn that an inquiry was underway.

Meanwhile, security guard Irfan Channa has been detained by the police. No FIR was, however, registered till late in the evening.
