KARACHI: Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Sunday carried out an extensive inspection of major infrastructure projects in the metropolis and directed officials concerned to accelerate work on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line corridor while ensuring quality and transparency in all ongoing development schemes.
The chief minister, accompanied by ministers Nasir Shah, Jam Khan Shoro, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and others, began his visit by inspecting the Red Line project from Peoples Chowrangi to Safoora Chowrangi before travelling to Pahalwan Goth to review rehabilitation works on the main traffic corridor.
Transport Secretary Asad Zamin and TransKarachi CEO Zubair Channa briefed him that repair, patchwork and rehabilitation of mixed-traffic lanes on University Road were underway, while widening works had also begun.
Expressing concern over recurring water accumulation at Nipa, the chief minister directed officials to implement a permanent solution. “This location cannot be allowed to flood repeatedly. Resolve the issue properly and permanently,” he instructed.
The CM was informed that asphalt overlay works on several stretches of the corridor were being carried out during night to minimise inconvenience to commuters.
“You have the resources; now I want visible results on the ground. Work must continue in multiple shifts so that deadlines are achieved, and citizens get relief at the earliest,” the CM said.
At Shahrah-i-Bhutto, the chief minister reviewed progress on the 38-kilometre corridor linking Jam Sadiq Interchange with the M-9 Kathore Interchange.
He announced that the key link would be opened for traffic before Eid, calling it an Eid gift for the people of Karachi.
The CM also inspected the under-construction Azeempura flyover at Shah Faisal Colony and directed the mayor to complete the project within 90 days.
Earlier, the chief minister also reviewed progress on the Rs1.59 billion Pahalwan Goth Road rehabilitation and improvement project and the under-construction Munawar Chowrangi Underpass.
Also on Sunday, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon visited the Red Line project.
Talking to the media, he said relocation of utility lines on the University Road remained a big challenge.
He said the Sindh government took a tough decision to terminate the contract to build Mosamiyat-Numaish corridor and handed over the contract to the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO). “We are trying to restore traffic to some extent by the end of July.”
