NAROWAL: Two persons including a fifth-grade student and a government official have been injured in separate stray dog attacks here on Sunday.

Muhammad Sajjad Hussain, a resident of the Moti Gate area of Narowal city, told Dawn that his nephew Talha Shahbaz (11), a student of grade V, was playing with his friends in the Government Muslim High School when a stray dog attacked him suddenly and bit his right leg. The frightened child tried to escape but the dog chased and attacked him again. He said the dog bit him again on the left leg.

He said that other children shouted and pelted stones at the dog and chased it away. The injured child was shifted to the Narowal DHQ Hospital.

The news of the stray dog attack has spread panic among the citizens and many have reportedly confined their children to their homes.

Meanwhile, Punjab Cooperative Department official Sameer Upal (42), a resident of the Mohalla Jilani Colony, was also attacked by a stray dog on the railway road. He was seriously injured in the attack and had been shifted to Narowal DHQ Hospital for treatment.

Citizens Muhammad Asif and Aamir Sultan told Dawn that dozens of stray dogs had been roaming the roads and streets of Narowal city.

They claimed that stray dogs had also bitten and injured citizens in the past. They said that the district administration, municipal committee, health and livestock departments had been informed several times about the matter but they had failed to control the situation.

District Information Officer Ehsanul Haq said the Narowal district administration had been taking steps to cull stray dogs. He said the injured were being treated at the DHQ Hospital.

Citizens have demanded that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz take immediate and strict notice of the situation.
