LAHORE: The Women University Multan (WUM) inaugurated a multipurpose centre aimed to enhance the economic empowerment of young women by building their digital capacities, connecting them with emerging opportunities and supporting sustainable livelihoods.

The centre, under the project “Digitalisation for Women’s Economic Empowerment (D4WEE)” was supported by UN Women and KOICA and implemented by Kaarvan Crafts Foundation.

WUM Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Uzma Quraishi, as the chief guest, inaugurated the centre on Friday along with representatives from development partners, faculty heads, and a large number of students.

The newly-established multipurpose center is equipped with 30 high-tech computers, modern projection systems, and a CCTV-based security infrastructure. The facility is designed to support teaching, training, seminars, workshops, and co-curricular activities, providing students with a modern and interactive learning environment.

The registration process for students has also been completed, with 30 students initially enrolled in a one-month intensive training programme aimed at enhancing digital literacy, technical skills, and professional competencies.

Dr Saima Nasreen briefed the participants about the project in detail, highlighting its objectives and expected outcomes. She emphasised that the initiative had been designed to bridge the digital divide and equip students with practical, industry-relevant skills that would enhance their academic and professional growth.

Prof Quraishi stated that the university was moving forward with a vision of modernisation, internationalisation, and digital transformation. She highlighted that in the era of advanced technology, students must be equipped with AI-based tools, digital platforms, and globally-recognised certifications, such as Google certifications, to remain competitive in the global landscape.

She further stressed the importance of hard work, discipline, and continuous learning, urging students to utilise such platforms for self-development and innovation.

She emphasised that the youth of Pakistan must play a positive and constructive role in national development and contribute towards building a progressive and empowered society.

UN Women Programme Coordinator Ms Sidra highlighted ongoing initiatives for women empowerment and workplace harassment prevention. She emphasised that legal frameworks were inclusive and ensured protection, dignity, and equal rights for all individuals in professional environments.

Kaarvan CEO Mr Danish stated that such initiatives opened new dimensions of digitalisation and learning opportunities for youth. He added that the establishment of this center would serve as a catalyst for digital transformation, innovation, and skills development.

The ceremony was attended by Registrar Dr Deeba Shahwar, senior faculty members, library staff and students.
