KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) has granted post-arrest bail to a former Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker and two others in a rioting case registered in January.

Former MNA Alamgir Khan, PTI leaders Dawa Khan and Mairaj had filed bail applications before the ATC-VII judge, through their counsel Advocate Shujaat Ali Khan.

After hearing the prosecution and defence counsel, the court granted them bail against surety bonds of Rs50,000 each.

According to defence counsel, the PTI leaders were booked in the present case after they had secured bail in a case pertaining to a protest demonstration near the Karachi Press Club against the hike in fuel prices in April.

The lawyer argued that the applicants’ names were neither mentioned in the FIR nor in the charge sheet.

He maintained that the PTI leaders were booked in the case after four months of the incident, and the prosecution had failed to produce any substantial evidence against the applicants.

A case was registered at the Korangi Industrial Area (KIA) police station under Sections 147 (rioting), 324 (attempted murder), 353 ((assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.
