ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights of the working class and upholding the promise of providing ‘bread, shelter and employment’ to the people made by the party’s founding leaders.

“The PPP is the true representative party of workers and labourers and has stood shoulder to shoulder with the working class in every era,” PPP Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari said in a statement.

Terming workers the backbone of the national economy, Mr Bukhari said labourers, under the platform of the People’s Labour Bureau, waged a historic struggle against dictatorship and for the restoration of democracy.

Mr Bukhari extended heartfelt felicitations to the workers on the occasion of International Labour Day and paid glowing tributes to them.

Recalling the party’s pro-worker legacy, he stated that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto granted constitutional protection to labour rights through the country’s first labour policy in 1972 and established the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) for workers’ welfare.
