The US State Department says roughly 20,000 Americans have returned home since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, Al Jazeera reports.

Other Americans have been evacuated to third countries or are currently en route home, the department has said, without providing numbers.

US officials are coordinating charter flight and ground transportation operations for Americans looking to leave the Middle East that “will continue to ramp up”, the department adds.
