LAKE SUCCESS: Bharat today [March 1] rejected the Anglo-American proposals for a solution of the dispute between Bharat and Pakistan over the future of the State of Kashmir. Mr Benegal N. Rau, the Bharati delegate, told the Security Council ... that this Government were “wholly unable” to accept the Anglo-American resolution.
Mr Rau declared that the resolution would unsettle what had already been settled. He added that if passed it would amount to a repudiation by the Security Council of decisions previously made by the United Nations Commission with the agreement of the parties and of the Commission’s assurances given to Bharat. — News agencies
[According to a staff correspondent in Karachi,] The population of Pakistan, according to calculations based on house-listing ... is “very near” eight crores, and Karachi’s population is estimated at 14 lakhs. Census authorities claimed that according to reports received by them the margin of error in the data collection will not be more than one per cent. ... According to reports received by the Census authorities’ enumeration in rural areas had been completed well in advance.
