LAHORE: The Higher Education Department (HED) on Wednesday constituted a four-member team to investigate the girl’s suicide attempt at a private university three days ago.

Fatima (21), a D. Pharmacy student at the University of Lahore, had jumped from the third floor of the building and was rushed to a local hospital with both legs fractured badly and injuries to her other body parts.

HED Secretary Ghulam Fareed Kathia told Dawn that a four-member committee - three vice chancellors (two of public sector universities and one of a private university) and a Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) member - was constituted to probe the matter.

He said the committee would submit its report in four days and then he would be able to further comment on the issue.

A senior police official on condition of anonymity told this reporter that the family of the girl did not lodge a complaint.

He said initial investigation revealed that the girl had attempted suicide over personal issue. Meanwhile, the student is under treatment at the Lahore General Hospital. A medical board has been formed to ensure her continuous monitoring.

According to the board, headed by LGH Principal Prof Farooq Afzal, the student’s condition is critical; however, her heartbeat and blood pressure are satisfactory.

Medical board member Prof Jodat Saleem said improvement has been observed in the student’s GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale), which has been recorded at level 7. A “weaning trial” has been initiated to remove her from the ventilator. After the transfusion of blood and platelets, the reports returned to normal. Improvement has also been observed in her lung condition, and her requirement for oxygen has decreased.
