GUJAR KHAN: The body of a missing teenage girl was recovered from a nullah near Rawat, while a boy drowned in Dungi Dam near Gujar Khan.

According to Kahuta police, 15-year-old Sania Bibi, daughter of Muhammad Waris, a resident of Kahuta town, had gone missing from her home the previous day.

Her body was found lying in Langg Nullah in the Rawat area on Wednesday morning.

Zakaullah Shah, Station House Officer (SHO) of Kahuta police station, said the body was shifted to THQ Hospital Kahuta for a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death, in case it was not due to drowning.

He added that her family had told police she was mentally unsound and had left home barefoot. They were searching for her when her body was later found miles away in the Rawat area on the bank of the nullah.

In a separate incident, a nine-year-old boy, identified as Tallah, a resident of Guliana, drowned while swimming in a canal near Dungi Dam in Gujar Khan on Wednesday morning.

The victim’s body was retrieved by other young men present at the site and shifted to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Rescue 1122 personnel also responded to the emergency call, but the body had already been moved to the hospital before their arrival, Rescue 1122 sources confirmed.

It is pertinent to mention that dozens of mini dams and nullahs around Gujar Khan have become popular spots for swimming and fishing among the youth, despite Section 144 being imposed to prohibit such activities.

There is a dire need for police authorities and the district administration to conduct raids and arrest violators, especially in light of the rising incidents of flooding and drownings.

Meanwhile, the anti-encroachment team of the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (PERA) was allegedly attacked by encroachers, mainly pushcart vendors, during an operation in Gujar Khan city.

According to Chaudhry Azhar Majeed, Chief Officer (CO) of the Municipal Committee Gujar Khan, a team was conducting an operation to remove encroachments in the city’s busy commercial areas when a group of vendors launched an organised attack on the squad, which was being led by Enforcement Inspector Chand Mubeen.

The CO said the injured official was medically examined at THQ Hospital Gujar Khan and a complaint has been lodged with the local police.
