Whether our looks, intelligence, success, popularity or even happiness, comparison with others is an integral part of human nature. Comparison also gives one a reference point for how they are doing, even if it’s not always healthy or accurate. And this is where ThanAverage — quirky, interactive experiment brings in some fun in your life while seeing yourself better or worse than average.

ThanAverage is a simple and highly interactive website where you’re asked to judge yourself in comparison to 100 ‘average’ people on various statements, such as “Are you more perceptive than average?” or “Do you have better dental hygiene than average?” etc.

Choose ‘Yes, I’m better’ or ‘No, I’m worse’ and then you’re shown a breakdown of how your answer compares to what others have said. The fun part is seeing the result displayed as a percentage where small shapes like triangles, domes or ovals shift left or right to indicate the distribution of responses. You simply have two options — whether to agree or disagree — and then clicking on the Next button, which appears to take you to the next statement.

That’s it. No tracking, no accounts, no ads, just a very stripped-down self-assessment game. It’s fun. The questions are random, self-aware and often humorous. It makes you think without feeling like a test.

However, you will not get any complete final “score,” personality result or summary of your responses. This may be intentional to keep it light, but a dashboard-style review would give a sense of completion or reflection. It only shows you the percentage of people you fall in with on the previously asked questions.

ThanAverage is simple, clever and oddly satisfying website, but also limited in depth. It works as a boredom-breaker or a mirror to reflect on your self-perception but, after a short while, the lack of structure and context leaves you wanting for more.
