BUILDING COLLAPSE: This is with reference to the editorial ‘Building collapse’ (July 5). I do not understand why some people often blame the Sindh government for such tragedies. It has done a ‘good job’ by taking necessary steps to prevent such incidents in future. For instance, it renamed the Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA) as the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA). What else a government can do? Anyone can now violate building codes, and construct 15 floors above the permitted 10. This will allow at least some people to earn billions of rupees and send the money into foreign bank accounts. We should all stop blaming the seriously efficient Sindh government.

TEST SYLLABUS: Recently, I applied for the post of monitoring evaluation assistant, and was informed about the test date. I logged into the official website of the National Testing Service (NTS) and went through the syllabus which included Current Affairs, Pakistan Affairs, English, the Constitution of 1973 and the Election Act of 2017. I reached the test centre on time and saw the question paper booklet. It had 100 questions, but none was related to the given syllabus. This left most of the can-didates confused and worried, wondering how to crack the paper. It would have been easier for the candidates had they been provided the right syllabus.

TEST OF SURVIVAL: The monsoon season has brought forth rather stark disparities in society. While some areas have a good drainage system, others suffer inundation when children slosh through accumulated rainwater. For some people, monsoon brings joy. For others, it is a test of survival with leaking and collapsing roofs. It restricts movement, disrupts livelihoods, and threatens lives in the face of waterborne illnesses that follow in monsoon’s wake. Those in power should deal with these issues seriously with proper rain drainage systems.
