KARACHI: Persisting heat, high humidity and the absence of sea breeze kept citizens on the edge on Tuesday as mercury crossed the 40-degree Celsius mark in parts of the metropolis.

According to the Met department’s data, while the city’s average temperature recorded was 39.9 degrees Celsius — a 4.2 degree-Celsius deviation from the city’s normal June temperature of 35.7 degrees Celsius — mercury soared to 40.7 degrees Celsius and 40.5 degrees Celsius in the areas of airport and Gulistan-i-Jauhar, respectively.

At 11am, the average temperature of the metropolis was recorded 39 degrees Celsius. The heat index was 51 degrees Celsius at 3pm.

“There is a low-pressure area, now over the Indian Gujarat, blocking the sea breeze. We are expecting that weather conditions will improve by tomorrow evening with the resumption of the sea breeze,” explained Met department’s focal person Anjum Nazeer Zaigham, adding that searing heat would likely subside by Thursday.

However, Jacobabad remained the hottest city in the province with 46 degrees Celsius temperature followed by Mohenjo Daro 45.5 degrees Celsius and Dadu 44.5 degrees Celsius.

According to the Met department daily advisory, hot and humid but occasionally windy conditions are likely to prevail tomorrow in the city with maximum temperature ranging between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius.
