KARACHI: Three passengers of a bus were killed and 17 others, including women and children, injured when the vehicle overturned near Gulshan-i-Hadeed on Friday, police said.

The police said that the accident took place because the driver fell asleep.

Steel Town SHO Allan Khan Abbasi said that the driver responsible for the accident managed to escape from the spot. He said the bus was coming from Shikarpur to Karachi.

The victim, Allah Bux, 30, got off a rickshaw when he was struck by the vehicle.

DIG-Traffic Pir Mohammed Shah told Dawn that the accident occurred on Link Road towards National Highway near the Samandari Baba shrine.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Ghafoor, 59, Ghulam Fareed, 25, and Kausar Saeed, 35.

DIG Shah said that the Karachi Road Accident Analysis Team (Kraat) indicated that the primary cause of the accident was driver fatigue. Recklessness and negligence, in the form of driving without adequate rest, directly contributed to the incident, he added.

Meanwhile, a young man was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Superhighway on Friday, police said.

The corpse was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
