LARKANA: Members of the High Court Bar Associations (HCBAs) of Larkana and Mirpurkhas on Thursday demanded federal government halt plans for the construction of six ‘strategic’ canals on Indus River and take back 26th Amendment and Peca Act.

Larkana HCBA observed token strike from 10.30am to 11.30am in a camp pitched near the bar’s office where Athar Abbas Solangi, newly-elected president of HCBA, told this correspondent that the protest would continue if the government did not pay heed to their demands.

He termed the six canals a conspiracy aimed at destroying fertile land of Sindh and demanded Sindh government should fight the case effectively. Peca Act was against freedom of expression, he said.

In Mirpurkhas, a meeting of HCBA managing committee condemned the canals project, which jeopardised Sindh’s constitutional rights, environmental integrity and socio-economic stability. The meeting demanded the federal government and Council of Common Interests immediately halt Green Pakistan initiative, and decided to observe token hunger strike every Friday.
