ISLAMABAD: As Azerbaijan prepares to host COP29 this year, its embassy in Islamabad held a luxurious celebration on Friday night to mark the 106th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s independence.

Hosted by the Embassy of Azerbaijan at a local hotel, the celebration was attended by numerous dignitaries, including the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Romina Khurshid Alam, along with envoys and local guests.

Azeri Ambassador Khazar Farhadov led the celebrations, which highlighted the historic establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on May 28, 1918, recognised as the first democratic republic in the Muslim East. During his address, Ambassador Farhadov emphasised the significant achievements of the fledgling republic, which swiftly established its parliament and government, defined its borders, and undertook essential state-building measures.

He informed his guests that despite its brief existence of only 23 months, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic made a lasting impact by laying the groundwork for democratic traditions and national statehood.

The ambassador noted the republic’s pivotal role in shaping Azerbaijan’s future independence, which was restored in 1991.

He attributed the preservation of this sovereignty to the leadership of Heydar Aliyev, whose policies had been continued and enriched by the current president, Ilham Aliyev.

Ambassador Farhadov also underscored the robust bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Pakistan, which have been strong since Pakistan recognised Azerbaijan’s independence on December 12, 1991. Diplomatic ties were formally established on June 9, 1992.

“The relationship has flourished over the years, marked by significant achievements such as the establishment of direct flights between the two countries in 2022 and 2023 and the influx of over 50,000 Pakistani tourists to Azerbaijan in 2023. The ease of obtaining an online ASAN visa has further strengthened these connections,” the envoy said.

In a significant announcement, it was revealed that Azerbaijan had been chosen to host COP29 in December 2023. This selection, made with unanimous support from all participating countries, underscores Azerbaijan’s leadership and dedication to addressing climate change on various scales. The event will further solidify Azerbaijan’s standing as a key player in global environmental efforts.

As the evening drew to a close, Ambassador Farhadov expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s continuous support and celebrated the growing trade and economic ties between the two nations, noting the trade turnover reaching up to $100 million.

“The mutual respect and cooperation between Azerbaijan and Pakistan promise a future of strengthened relations and shared progress,” the ambassador said.
