THE use of drugs in educational institutions is alarming. The pace at which it is happening is even more alarming, almost frightening. The number of teenagers doing drugs on campuses is as frustrating as it is worrisome, and there is no point for society to continue to live in denial. We must wake up to the grim reality, and do something about it before it gets too late. And the first step towards doing something is to acknowledge the reality and then try to understand what is happening and why.
Moreover, children of today are extremely stressed about their academics and careers. They live under constant pressure, and with the fear of lagging behind in a tough, competitive world.
Running away from these pressures and fears, they resort to smoking, followed by recreational drugs. Before they know it, they become habitual offenders and addicts.
The other critical factor in this tragic equation is that of the availability of drugs in society, especially around campuses. This is an utter failure of local administrations, provincial and federal governments, and law-enforcement agencies, particularly police.
The government and other relevant authorities should look into the matter and take strict action against the menace. Additionally, parents must also be very vigilant about their children’s activities, and should educate them about the adverse effects of drug addiction on their wellbeing.
