ANNOYING POTHOLE: A huge pothole, almost a crater, near the Nipa Bridge in Karachi has been causing inconvenience to the commuters for the last three months. As a result, massive traffic jams are common on the University Road, which in itself is a nuisance owing to the public transport project that has consumed more than half the road. Road accidents and traffic chaos waste public’s precious time and money, and add to air and noise pollution in the area. The relevant authorities, especially the city mayor, need to fix at least the pothole, if not the Road itself, as soon as possible.

HARMFUL WASTE: Industrial waste that is not capable of breaking down naturally is classified as non-biodegradable, and is harmful to both the environment and human health. There is an urgent need to make the move towards biodegradable products that do not pose as significant a threat because they do not require special handling, and are not naturally toxic.

GREAT MOVE: Pakistan Railways (PR) has embarked on a strategic shift towards solar energy. The PR management has identified 100 sites where electricity consumption happens to be higher. This decision has been widely appreciated, and rightly so, because it can save up to Rs1 billion annually, which the PR may use for improving its services. If the revenue is invested wisely, it can turn PR into a revenue-generating asset for the country through expansion of freight operations and refurbishment of coaches to attract commercial interest.

HELTH REFORMS: Back in the early 1970s, a law was passed that prohibited the manufacture and import of any drug under brand name. Unfortunately, successive governments failed to keep the law functional, and the common man suffered. We need to revive that piece of legislation for the sake of our people.
