THIS refers to the article “Circular debt’s curse” (B&F, Feb 26) which has rightly underscored the dire consequences of the government’s failure to implement substantial reforms in the energy value chain over the last decade. The long-standing issue of circular debt has become a significant impediment to the country’s economic growth.

Besides our failure to deal with the issues of circular debt, electricity theft and inefficient billing and collection system are the other reasons that result in substantial losses for the relevant companies. All such problems need to be tackled which may help the country both immediately and in the long run.

With a new government in place now, addressing these issues will be the actual test of its competency.

It is by now clear that procrastination and the tendency to pass off the burden onto the consumers are no longer tenable options. It is time for the government to take decisive actions to address Pakistan’s circular debt crisis in the energy sector, and pave the way for a more prosperous future for generations to come.
