Hmm…I get it. It’s that time of the year when you’re often scolded by your parents to focus on studying more than spending time on other activities, mainly because it’s the examination time. Some of you take examinations and studies very seriously, displaying a genuine interest. But some may not be as serious about studies as they should be, and develop a dislike that, no matter how much they are lectured on the importance of education, it seems to leave no mark on them. And this is where the most sensitive and severe problem arises which today, we will try to fix a bit.

For those kids, the struggle to study is real as they genuinely have a love-hate relationship with those textbooks. However, there is no doubt that, no matter how much you dislike studying or detest the thought of it, it remains the most important thing in your life. Studies serve as the foundation for a successful tomorrow. The reasons for this lack of interest can vary, such as it could be finding more enjoyment in entertainment rather than the serious nature of studies.

Studies are the hard work put in now as an investment in yourself and your future. It might not feel like it in the moment, but trust me, it’s laying the foundation for your success down the road. So, when it seems like every page turned is a battle inside your mind, remember that each battle will take you a step closer to victory.

You are not the only one who hates studies

If you think you are the only person hating studies, then my little fellow, know that you’re not alone in this, many kids feel the same way. It’s just that they keep it to themselves, like you do. The key is to speak about it with someone you trust and have confidence in. Your age is all about curiosity, exploration and, of course, having a good time. It’s natural to want more excitement and enjoyment in your life.

Dealing with a dislike or hatred for studying can be challenging, but some strategies and approaches can help you develop a more positive attitude toward learning.

Here are some tips to tackle your disdain for studies.

Learn not study!

In my opinion, our education system needs to change, but since we can’t change the education system, let’s bring some positive changes in ourselves to deal with the most unlikely situations. For instance, we have been taught to study, rote memorise, etc, but learning is different from that. You learn through understanding the topic and you can understand a topic when both your mind and body are fresh and free from any stress.

For example, math is often the most challenging subject for many students. If you think of it as a subject to study, you may keep trying to find your way to solve the problems, but you will never conclude. If you see math as a life’s process to learn from, an essential tool to master all your calculation problems and take its problems and equations as challenges to overcome rather than hurdles to study, you’ll find a shift in perspective.

Approach math as a skill to develop, an ally in solving real-world problems. When you view it in this light, each equation becomes a puzzle to solve, an opportunity to enhance your problem-solving abilities. Take your daily tasks from grocery to counting steps and covering the space, math is everywhere. You will see that your understanding will be far better than before.

Identify the root cause

Even after changing the approach you still find it hard to study and still hate the subjects. Isn’t it? Then find out the underlying reasons for your dislike of studying.

I remember, in my childhood, there was a time when I ran from the word ‘studies’, I didn’t want to study nor wanted to see books, but then my brother talked to me very nicely. I told him that I almost had problems in all subjects except art.

He laughed and said, “There is nothing wrong with subjects or you, it’s just that you find art way too interesting because of the colours than the grey matter in the books.”

I was surprised by the simple explanation. From then onwards my approach to my studies changed. So kids, the underlying problems could be many for your dislike. You can solve them by talking to your parents or elder siblings and tell them openly the reason for your dislike of studies or a particular subject.

Create a positive study environment

Not every child enjoys the privilege of a conducive atmosphere for studying. Amidst siblings or in a noisy environment, they carry out their assigned tasks without much concern for quality, often not understanding a single word. It becomes mere copying or placing information on the page, without genuine learning of the topic.

I won’t simply advise you to create a comfortable, well-lit and distraction-free study environment. Instead, I encourage you to carefully choose the time for homework or study, aiming for moments when your home is relatively quiet or devoid of disturbances.

Establish a routine

I understand, studying may not be your favourite activity. However, as children, it’s important to accept this reality. Whether you love it or loathe it, education is a necessary part of your journey as a student. There’s a saying that with persistent effort, even tasks we dislike can become habitual and become part of our lives. This is where maintaining a consistent study routine can play a pivotal role in your life.

So build a routine that not only fulfils your academic requirements, but also transforms your studying from a dreaded task into a meaningful educational journey.

Embrace technology smartly

Don’t limit yourself to just social media apps; explore various websites that offer a uniquely interactive experience for specific subjects. Bring in the power of educational apps, online resources and multimedia tools to infuse dynamism and interactivity into your learning journey.

Seek assistance

The act of asking questions builds an intelligent mind. Therefore, whenever you feel you are not clear, don’t hesitate to ask. Challenge yourself to break the silence and actively engage in the learning process by expressing your inquiries. Don’t ignore or avoid it, as it only adds to your dislike and gradually builds up a hatred for the topic or the subject. It’s through asking questions that you deepen your understanding and foster a proactive approach to knowledge acquisition.

Remember, education is a unique journey for every youngster and the path to discovering the right approach may take time. Be patient, stay resilient and you will soon transform your studying into a meaningful and enjoyable educational experience.
