KARACHI: An alarming rise is being witnessed in the incidents of street crime in the metropolis as armed criminals killed a man and shot at and wounded four others over resistance in different areas on Saturday.

Police said that Rehman Syed Asghar, 60, was gunned down by armed men when he put up resistance to their attempt to snatch his motorbike on Allama Iqbal Road, Block-2, PECHS.

Ferozabad SHO Inam Hasan Junejo said that Mr Asghar was about to park his motorcycle outside a shop when armed pillion riders, who were apparently chasing him, tried to snatch the two-wheeler from him. As he put up resistance, the bike-snatchers opened fire on him and fled without any loot.

He fell from the bike after being shot and was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The victim was the watchman of a jewellery shop in the same area. He was resident of Qasba Colony.

Four men shot by robbers

A young man was shot at and wounded by robbers near the Numaish traffic intersection on early Saturday morning, police said.

Soldier Bazaar SHO Waqar Azeem said that armed men intercepted a car and snatched a cell phone from Rahil Hasan, 29. As he put up resistance, the robbers opened fire on him and fled along with the snatched phone.

Despite being injured, Rahil drove to Lines Area from where the Brigade police shifted him to the JPMC for treatment. The police said his condition was stated to be stable.

In Dhoraji Colony, 50-year-old Mir Habib Shah was shot at and wounded by the firing of armed pillion riders when he resisted a robbery bid in Adamjee Nagar within the remit of the Bahadurabad police station. He was shifted to the JPMC for treatment.

In New Karachi, armed muggers fired at a young man over resistance in Sector-12. The New Karachi Industrial Area police said that the injured man, identified as Nasrullah, 25, was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for treatment.

In Manghopir, 25-year-old Abdul Malik was shot at and wounded by armed robbers near Saima Villas on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Manghopir police, the young man put up resistance to a robbery bid. He sustained a bullet wound and was taken to the ASH for treatment.
