PESHAWAR: A group of doctors has demanded abolition of the law governing Medical Teaching Institutions (MTIs) in the province, and launching a probe against Prof Nausherwan Burki, the brain behind health reforms law, for alleged corruption.

Speaking at a news conference at the Peshawar Press club on Friday, Grand Health Alliance, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa representatives said MTI boards had been created on political basis in the major hospitals of the province, which did not serve the purpose. Alliance’s president Dr Musa Kaleem, provincial doctors association president Dr Amir Taj, the alliance’s spokesman Nasir Ali Shah, Young Doctors Association president Dr Asfandyar Bettani and other leaders were present at the presser.

The doctors demanded a transparent investigation into the corruption charges against Mr Barki and other relevant officials. They alleged the previous PTI government had destroyed the entire health system due to increasing corruption at different levels. They said the PTI government never paid attention to solution to the doctors’ issues rather created problems for them.

They said Nausherwan Burki was still controlling the health department from sitting in the US, and in such a situation the doctors were unable to perform their duties.
