ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday notified Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, the provincial president of the Pakistan Peoples Party, as senator on a general seat from Sindh.

The seat had fallen vacant due to the resignation of former Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Senator Faisal Vawda.

According to a notification issued here, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has been elected unopposed as a member of the Senate.

He had won the Senate seat in March last year as well following disqualification of Mr Vawda for life under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution in February 2022.

The ECP had, however, de-notified Mr Khuhro and reinstated Vawda on Dec 8 in line with a judgment of the apex court. Mr Vawda had finally resigned as senator on Dec 28 as per a commitment he gave to the apex court.

The Supreme Court while overturning Vawda’s lifelong disqualification had disqualified him from the current legislature after he admitted the mistake of submitting a false affidavit.

The Supreme Court had set aside the ECP decision and ordered him to send his resignation to the Senate chairman. In its verdict, the apex court also declared him eligible for the next general elections and Senate elections.
