ISLAMABAD: Customs Intelligence Department has seized a huge quantity of smuggled goods worth Rs635 million in Karachi as part of the tax department drive launched across the country to discourage smuggling.

The smuggled goods include 3,600 laptops, 2,396 watches, cosmetics of Indian origin, 834 cartons of aircraft engine oil, 190 boxes of assorted food supplements, foreign liquors, cheese and other miscellaneous items.

Director General Customs Intelligence Faiz Ahmad Chadhar told Dawn that despite limited resources the department has tried its best to control the curse of smuggling. He said that the value of seized goods in two cases in Karachi is estimated at Rs635m.

As part of the drive, the DG said that the value of country-wide seizure of smuggled goods is over Rs1 billion in the past two weeks. “We have also made seizures of smuggled cigarettes worth over Rs220m”, he said.
