THIS is with reference to the report ‘Imran invokes Mujib parallel as PTI unsure of march destination’ (Nov 2). The parallels drawn with the Awami League need to be revisited. On May 1, 1970, as can be checked from the archives, Sheikh Mujibur Rehman had said at Hatiya that the elections were meant for the framing of a constitution and not for forming a government.

On March 4, 1971, he told The New York Times that each wing should have its own prime minister, which, again, indicates that Mujib was not interested in forming a central government.

Further, the action by Pakistan Army was not meant to deny power to anyone. In his deposition to the Hamoodur Rahman Commission, Gen Yahya Khan said he had offered the position of deputy chief martial law administrator to Mujib, but the latter turned that down. Let’s keep history intact.
