SUKKUR: Timely detection of damaged track helped Railways officials to save Sukkur Express from derailment near Ranipur, in Khairpur district, on Sunday.

Minutes before giving ‘clear signal’ to the train, some railway workers alerted their high-ups that fishplates of ‘Up’ track ahead appeared broken.

Sukkur Express, which was to set off to Jacobabad after starting its journey from Karachi, had to be stopped on the outskirts of Khairpur.

Several other trains that were to follow were also halted at different stations/spots. Normal rail traffic on this sector was restored after three hours to facilitate repair of the track.

Railway officials said that the assistant way inspector concerned was suspended until an inquiry into the damage and was completed.
