ARBITRARY FARES: The recent rains and flood have severely affected the country’s railway system. Taking advantage of the situation, the inter-district road transporters have increased their fares. Millions of people who have to commute regularly because of employment concerns have thus been pushed further into financial misery. The relevant authorities should take action against the culprits.

MASSIVE CUT: The Sindh government’s decision to deduct five days’ salary of government officials is horrendous. Many of them are affected by the floods and have lost their shelters, belongings and savings. How are they supposed to run their kitchens, repair their houses and pay instalments after this massive cut? Ironically, the government has exempted the powerful section from deduction, such as executive and judiciary. The inhumane decision must be reversed and the government must provide financial assistance to all the affectees on its own.

FLOOD CONSEQUENCES: A couple of weeks ago, floodwater ravaged Charsadda Tarnab and wiped out entire communities. Many people are now left without a roof on their heads. Thousands of people have taken shelter on rooftops, and along the embankments. Their crops have been destroyed and livestock have been washed away. The victims are in dire need of food, clothing, medications and drinking water. The wait for assistance continues.

FAST AND FURIOUS: The newly built U-turns on Srinagar Highway in Islamabad have made the traffic fast and furious. Many accidents have occurred already. Cars and motorcycles change their lanes abruptly, increasing the chances of accidents. In addition, drivers have to travel longer to use the U-turns near G-10, Police Lines and G-11, which wastes a lot of time and fuel. The government should instead build underpasses or flyovers at these points or at least make the traffic signals operational.
