POPULIST APPROACH: This is with reference to the article ‘Politics of establishment’ (June 8) which rightly pointed out the dangers inherent in the policy adopted by the current political opposition. Statements coming from individuals who had been holding responsible positions only recently may have dangerous consequence from the national security point of view. All concerned should take serious note of any irresponsible statement issued by anyone.

TAXING THE ELITE: If the government really wants to stop burdening the poor and the middle class, it should recover more revenue from the elite. For instance, the government can impose a 10 per cent tax or surcharge on domestic consumers whose monthly power consumption exceeds 3,000 units. Such people will not mind paying another Rs10,000. It is time the government taxed the sacred cows.

MONSOON PRECAUTIONS: Karachi has witnessed massive disruption and destruction during the monsoon season in recent years. As precautionary measures, we must maintain a safe distance from streetlights, cable poles, transformers and billboards, and avoid touching electric sockets and devices at home. Eidul Azha is due to fall in the monsoon season and it is equally important to keep the animals away from electric poles.

TABLES TURNED: Seeing our cricket team’s supremacy in the white-ball batting department is a real treat for the lovers of the game in the country. Babar Azam is the top-ranked batsman in both One Day International (ODI) and T20 formats, followed by Imam-ul-Haq in the ODIs and Mohammad Rizwan in T20s. The tables seem to have turned in the regional context as well. Indian batters who used to dominate white-ball cricket are going through a rough patch, especially in the T20s. Pakistan cricket is enjoying a purple patch.
