KARACHI: Government school teachers yesterday [March 17] locked and sealed the offices of the Directorate of Education (Karachi region) situated in the old Sind Assembly Building to press the Government for reinstating the Director of Education and all the teachers retired under MLR 14. They declared that they would keep the Directorate under their control until their demand was accepted by the Government. Originally, the Association had decided to hold a meeting early in the morning at Liaquatabad Government Secondary School and then to assemble at the Directorate of Education. From the Directorate, they were to go in a procession to the Governor’s House.

Mrs Amana Ahmad, President, Government School Teachers Association, said that the plan was changed as “we do not want, as respectable teachers, to be lathi-charged by Police in front of the Governor’s House. The mood and the temper of the local Police is so unpredictable these days that no self-respecting person would venture staging a peaceful and dignified demonstration in the city”. She said that every morning … all the teachers of the Government schools of the City would assemble at the Directorate… . They would resist any attempt to break the seal.
