EDITORIAL: The Prime Minister’s address to the nation … put into perspective the issue that was brought to the fore by the recent Rabwah incident. … His promise that he will work for a solution that is equitable … and in accordance with the tenets of Islam has brought reassurance … in an atmosphere charged with emotion. … Mr. Bhutto has thus committed himself to solving the issue in the only legitimate manner in which it could be solved — by a free debate in the National Assembly … and through other appropriate institutions.
The finality of prophethood is an article of faith with every Muslim, and it is hardly fair for any group of persons to claim that it is more dedicated to this fundamental tenet of Islam than others. Besides, it is hardly permissible to make political capital out of a highly emotive religious issue. This is what some people have undoubtedly tried to do by resorting to an intensive exercise in rabble rousing. … The people have shown wisdom … by refusing to allow anybody to run away with the issue. The country needs unity and peace to be able to protect itself ... and work for its salvation and progress. It cannot afford … divisiveness and disruption.
