LAHORE: The Government College University (GCU) on Wednesday removed its chief proctor for beating a student on the campus.

Two days ago, chief proctor Shahid Mirza had thrashed a student over ‘misbehaviour’ with him.

A video on social media revealed that a student was being thrashed in front of other students outside the amphitheatre.

The video showed that the chief proctor and deputy proctor were dragging a student and one of them was also thrashing him.

A large number of students gathered at the open air amphitheatre and launched the protest. The students were chanting slogans against the administration and also demanded action against the proctors.

GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Asgar Zaidi took notice of the incident and tweeted: “At Government College University, I have zero tolerance towards any member of GCU staff raising their voice or hand against a student. My first and foremost priority will always be the wellbeing of my students.”

He further tweeted: “I thank Mr. Shahid Mirza for his services as the Chief Procter. Mr Atif Bhatti will also be relieved of his duties as one of the proctors.”

“Dr. Rustam Mir will take on the duties as the Chief Procter henceforth. I wish Dr Rustam success in maintaining discipline and great relations between staff and students,” another tweet reads.

The students later thanked the vice chancellor for taking action against the proctor.

CONVOCATION: As many as 372 students were awarded degrees at the fifth convocation of the Government Graduate College, Township, on Wednesday.

Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) former chairman Dr Nizamuddin was chief guest.

Principal Prof Dr Ijaz Butt presented the annual report and said that in the light of new education policy of HEC, they have started a BS programme in 14 disciplines focusing on skilled education.

Mr Nizam said the commission like the American Community Colleges, successfully launched the associate degree programmes in media studies, information technology, and commerce and finance in colleges.As many as 25 students were awarded gold medals and 108 given rolls of honour in the convocation.

VISIT: A delegation of Voice of Animals Foundation visited Chand Bagh School on the invitation of Principal Chand Bagh School (CBS) Chaudhry Muhammad Afzal.

The delegation was headed by Abdul Ahad, who is the youngest animals rights activist in Pakistan.

Both institutions have mutually agreed to sign a MoU for making Chand Bagh School premises as animal-safe and animal-friendly and also for establishing butterfly and firefly gardens on the CBS campus.

CBS Principal Muhammad Afzal said the school would become an animal-safe campus and they would also train students as ECO leaders.
