DELHI: About 5,000 male and female teachers, including the Principals and the Head Masters of all the recognized Higher Secondary, Middle, and Primary Schools of Delhi Province, after four hours’ deliberation on Sunday [Jan 12] unanimously decided to strike work from January 13 … until their demands were accepted by the Education Department in toto.

…According to the main resolution passed in the general meeting of all the teachers in the province … the offers that have so far been made to the teachers by the Education Department fall much short of the demands of the Delhi Provincial Teachers’ Association.

…Scores of teachers in the capital city of India are found employed on a … salary standing at Re. 1 a day, which is hardly sufficient even to cover the cost of re-soling a shoe. In the countryside the teacher is paid Rs. 18 a month… . While a teacher with a degree of Master of Arts or of Science is paid Rs. 200 or Rs. 250 to start with by the University of Delhi, the same teachers if employed in a school, will start with Rs. 120 p.m.
