APART from the 10 national holidays, the people of Sindh are gifted with additional 10-15 holidays, depending on the situation. The corporate sector remains functional, but the offices of the provincial government and educational institutions enjoy all these holidays.

Recently, when there was a likelihood of a storm hitting the coast around Karachi, the government announced yet another holiday. Why? In these trying times when the people have just started going back to their normal routine post-lockdowns, the city was once again ordered to shut down because, as far as my understanding goes, the government was unable to drain the water and save the people from losses.

Some may claim the government did take some action, but the worth of the ‘action’ can be seen by the fact that the government did not trust its own efforts and announced a holiday.

Instead of handing out holidays to cover up for its follies and shortcomings, the government should really start doing what it needs to do for the last many years.
