KARACHI: An undertrial prisioner (UTP) allegedly involved in a sexual assault case escaped from the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he was admitted for treatment a few days ago, officials said on Tuesday.

They said the man was arrested by the Saeedabad police a couple of weeks ago. He was sent to jail by a local court on judicial remand. He fell ill there and doctors recommended his treatment in the JPMC.

“The UTP was brought here at the JPMC a few days ago and being treated at a respective ward,” said an official at the Saddar police station. “On Friday, he managed to unlock his handcuffs and fled. The two constables posted to keep an eye on him have been booked [for negligence] and arrested,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Bahadurabad police arrested a bus owner and its driver who allegedly ran over a police constable on Sharea Faisal while he was heading home on a motorbike recently after performing his duty at Port Qasim.

An official said Constable Malik Muhammad Asif was hit by a fast-moving bus of route 44-A near Karsaz. Taking advantage of the late hours and deserted road, the bus driver ran away, he said.

“The Bahadurabad police gathered evidence, collected footage of CCTV [closed-circuit televisions] cameras installed in the vicinity and managed to identify the bus involved in the accident,” said the official.
