DOMESTIC violence is a common problem all over the world. It is prevalent in both developing and developed countries, and is a reflection of our pseudo-civilised existence. Domestic violence can be classified in various forms, such as violence against spouse, children or the elderly. The victims face many types of abuse, like physical, emotional, psychological and financial deprivation.

Cases of domestic violence reported worldwide have seen an alarming rise, but they are just a small fraction of the actual cases as many of them go unregistered or unnoticed. Women and children are often the soft targets of abuse.

A significant number of deaths take place in India on a daily basis as a result of domestic violence. Illiteracy, economical dependency on men and a male-dominated society are some of the factors contributing to the problem. Dowry is one of the leading causes that results in violence against the newly-wed brides, especially in India.

Physically assaulting women, making horrendous remarks and depriving them of basic human rights are often highlighted in many parts of the country. Similarly, children are also made the target of this inhuman behaviour.

Unfortunately, the double standards and hypocrisy of society is evident in such matters. In some cases, the abuser may have mental health problems or require counselling for his behaviour. But, generally, domestic violence is a result of cumulative irresponsible behaviour demonstrated by a section of society. Not only the abuser is the main culprit, but all those who allow it to happen and be mere mute spectators are partners in crime.

Recently, a campaign was launched in India to encourage individuals to be vigilant and raise voice against domestic violence in their homes and around. The campaign was a big hit and successfully managed to draw the attention of crowds towards this issue.

Similarly, people in Pakistan need to wake up and rise. They should be aware about their rights and duties. All human beings deserve basic honour and respect, and people are not entitled to take the law into their hands.

Domestic violence has deeper roots. It is the mentality of society that needs an overhauling. A society is nothing but the constitution of individuals. Every individual must be vigilant and report any abuse happening around them. It is high time to raise our voice against injustice. Domestic violence has no place in modern society and it should be dealt with strongly.
