Athletes and anxiety

Published

THE mental health of athletes is one of the most ignored subjects in Pakistan. Most often, the athletes suffer from depression, stress or anxiety because of the injuries they get during their professional careers.

These injuries sometimes take time to heal, while some never completely go away.

For a common man, physical injuries may not become a source of mental trauma. But for a sportsperson, they result in a defunct state of mind. The bodies of these athletes are all they can rely upon. Also, they have a larger-than-life persona in the public eye.

They are regarded as modern day warriors, competitors who bravely push past obstacles and adversity in the pursuit of victory.

I happened to encounter two athletes who had sprained wings and thigh muscles. They said sporting activity was their only source of satisfaction, and when they are not able to do that, they become anxious and uncertain. These are clearly mental health issues.

Therefore, the relevant authorities must ensure that the athletes get proper treatment for their physical and mental health when they are injured. For that, the state must set up specialised healthcare options meant only for the sportspersons.
