The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued notices to Google Inc and Wikipedia for "disseminating sacrilegious content" through the two platforms, it emerged on Friday.

In a press release, the authority said it has been receiving complaints regarding "misleading search results associated with 'present khalifa of Islam' and an unauthentic version of the Holy Quran uploaded by the Ahmedi community on Google Play Store".

Being a matter of a very serious nature, the PTA has approached Google Inc with directions to immediately remove the unlawful content, the statement said.

"The platform has been issued the notice under the Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight and Safeguard) Rules 2020 to remove sacrilegious content to avoid any legal action by the regulator."

The authority added that complaints were also received regarding hosting blasphemous caricatures of Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and dissemination of "misleading, wrong, deceptive and deceitful information" through articles published on Wikipedia portraying Mirza Masroor Ahmad as a Muslim.

"After extensive communication on the matter, Wikipedia has been finally served with the notice to remove the sacrilegious content to avoid any legal action," the statement said.

In case the platforms remain non-compliant, the PTA shall be constrained to initiate further action under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (PECA) and Rules 2020, the statement said.

PTA shows how far behind it is in times. Dictating their false policies to foreign companies. A person is free to call themselves Muslims, Hindus or Thanos if they feel like. It's only a problem in states like Pakistan who dictate who is a muslim and who is not. Ridiculous. Let PTA ban Google services and wikipedia - Let PTA deprive their own citizens. Pakistanis need to realize that it is always a BAD idea to let agencies like PTA dictate to them what is right and what is wrong.

Pakistani people need to learn tolerance. Any stuff said by other community/ies /non-muslims claiming anything ,should be just ignored as other communities have same human rights of expression as Mulims in Pakistan have. Faith of Muslim within heart&mind should be so stone tough,which can take any outside different view gracefully. What Muslims of Pakistan wish-all non muslims or even intelligent muslims stop free expression?

Has PTA just started to use internet? Will notices be issued on every non-Islamic search result that one may come across on internet? Internet has no limits, it is a source of information as well as disinformation. These sacrilegious posts mentioned in this news is not new, it has been coming up in search results for a long time.

@Zahoor Hussain , Google is NOT in administrative control of Pakistan. As a gesture of politeness,Google may remove this stuff. However why do NOT you develop a graceful tolerance to be morally capable to ignore what does not suit your version of Islam? You need to understand 1 fact-you can not win opponentś heart through coercion. And Islam does not force itself on people. Why you are forcing yoyrself on other points of view?Are you not confident about your own faith inside you?

It s sad. But true. Mullahs have hijacked the Muhamadan law and twisted everything as per their own interpretations. It is by design,started from 1980&later on suited all political leaders. Who leader does not like his sheep population/young generation,duly addicted to opium of twisted interpretations of religion,easilly provocative& who on merit can nt compete world of science -hence useful only for food of political&religious leaders n the country. Obviously it is an ill-advise to ask authorities to ban Google and other search engines. Rather enforcing a ban makes a mockery of the claims which are made to regulate social media and tech companies. Realistically, content can be removed even from Google by sending a request. Wikipedia itself claims to be a platform where any information can be entered.

I have heard of and seen pictures of Pakistan in the 1960/70s and I agree it seems it was much different, progressive, and even tolerant than today. Its unfortunate that we have completely destroyed the beautiful peaceful vision of Jinnah. Most seem ignorant of what Jinbahbsyoif for and who he was as a human. A great beautiful legend of a human.

@Chrís Dăń, but you know, signing something doesn't mean anything, if we pakistanis dont practise it. You should read the UN Human Rights Declarations. Judging and declaring others to be non Muslims because we don't agree with their way of religion is bigotry and intolerance in itself, and not supported by the human rights declaration. Until we as a diverse nation understand and practise tolerance including religious tolerance, we can not progress and are in no position to lecture others.

@Dr.AsHamed., I think you need to stay updated. Even the west is now questioning the freedom of speech that internet and then social media allowed. Like half-cooked arguments, many people are criticizing the poorly managed policy of social media's regulation, yet they ignore the fact or perhaps don't know that many such freedoms are being questioned in west too.

Logic is very simple to follow for those supporting PTA's stand, only if they are willing to understand. If you don't want others to dictate which religion you should believe in, then stop doing it to others. Religion is not your personal property that you can kick people out of. All of the proponents of this notice are not doing any service to their own religion by towing mullahs' line and not trying to understand the logic behind the differences themselves.

@Laila, I myself have referred Charter of Human Rights by UN as signed by Pakistan. But still,Pakistani people are bigots. They do not like other religions to have their own views. Pakistanis have zero tolerance. They like to say anything themselves but can.not hear any otherś point of view. The frequent use of Blasphemy law is a glaring example. We have to be free from mullah &need to have our own views alongwith tolerance.
