THE National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman halted proceedings in a fake bank accounts case against Senate’s deputy chairman when the latter raised this issue at the national level. The deputy chairman alleged that the director-general of NAB, Rawalpindi, was blackmailing him, saying that he had the backing of powerful quarters, and that no one could remove him from his post.

In this respect, the senator has written letters to the prime minister and the army chief regarding the issue. He asserted that he intended to place the matter before a supranational tribunal, citing a plea of violation of human rights. That is not all. He has also threatened to raise the issue at the international level.

If the senator resorts to this course of action, it will damage the country’s reputation. Therefore, he should reconsider his plan. One also agrees that there may be many flaws in NAB and its personnel. In short, the issue needs to be resolved locally and smoothly.

A SPREE of accusations and counter-accusation has appeared in recent days in the national media since the NAB initiated legal proceedings against the Senate deputy chairman. In my opinion, because of his high position, the latter should have cooperated unconditionally with NAB in the investigations.

Even if there had been misuse of authority by any NAB official, he should have approached the courts. It is unfortunate that he chose to act rashly which is beyond comprehension.

One hopes that better sense will prevail and the individual will realise his obligations as nobody is above the law. He should cooperate with the NAB authorities if he has nothing to hide, and get his name cleared from the charges that have been levelled against him.
