Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh

This ‘honour roll’ of some of the most well known personalities associated with the Sindh Madressatul Islam begins with the institute’s most illustrious student: Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, who enrolled there at the age of 14. The biography of the founder of Pakistan is followed by that of the founder of the institute, Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi. Other notable students included are Shahnawaz Bhutto, Haji Abdullah Haroon and cricketer Hanif Mohammad. The book also features non-students Fatima Jinnah, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto among others, for their contributions towards the institute.

Development for an Equitable Society
Jamil Nasir

In this collection of writings, spanning from 2007 to 2015 and previously published in various newspapers of Pakistan, the author discusses the economy of the country in light of academic and empirical studies. In the first of the book’s four sections, the author evaluates the constraints and determinants affecting Pakistan’s economic growth. Part two is an analysis of inequality as a social choice, arising from the interplay of political factors. Part three considers the multiple pathways needed to alleviate the multidimensional phenomenon of poverty and the last section examines progress and the ‘economics of happiness’.
