KARACHI: A man was killed and another one wounded in an armed clash between two groups in New Karachi on Tuesday, police said.

The area police said the two groups exchanged gunfire in Khamiso Goth after a heated argument. The firing left 30-year-old Shameel dead and 45-year-old Sagheer wounded.

“The groups, seen recently active in the area, are mainly involved in drug business,” said Inspector Younus Khattak, the SHO of the New Karachi Industrial Area police station. “We conducted raids and rounded up several suspects. The gangs blamed each other for the police action and our reports suggested their argument today [Tuesday] turned violent as members of both groups fired at each other.”

The police, he said, had cordoned off the area after the incident and raids were conducted for the arrest of those involved in the incident. The dead and the wounded were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities and treatment.

Muggers attack two persons

Two persons were injured while resisting armed mugging attempts in different parts of the city on Tuesday.

A young man, identified as Waqar, was shot at by armed men when he offered resistance in Gulshan-i-Hadeed. The area police said that armed motorcyclists tried to loot the cash he had drawn from a private bank branch near his house. “We have obtained the CCTV footage of the area which showed that one of the suspects opened fire at the young man when he offered resistance. The armed bandits escaped, leaving their motorcycle behind due to the resistance offered by the injured youngster,” he said.

In North Nazimabad, a passer-by, identified as 45-year-old Sadiq Hussain, was injured when two suspects riding a motorcycle opened fire while fleeing after robbing a shop.
