THIS refers to the letter ‘Water conservation’ (Aug 4). Most canals do not have stone dykes in the country. The leakage of water not only decreases the quantity of water but also makes fields unfertilised.

An example of this is that of the Rohri canal which has leakages at various places. Though this is the biggest canal in the country, its water is not safe too. From Nawabshah to Saeedabad, the outflowing of water has become common now.

Looking at the issue of tube wells in Sindh, I must say the department concerned is inept.

No measures have been taken to increase water nor is there any good news on the fertilisation of lands. The government needs to take immediate action to rectify this situation.

I suggest to the central and provincial governments to work on canals on the entire irrigation system in the country and have a proper model of infrastructure to save water and fields.
