CHAGAI: Members of civil society and the family of a man, who was found dead in police custody in Kharan under mysterious circumstances on Monday, staged a demonstration outside the Kharan Press Club to protest against his alleged extra-judicial killing.

Addressing the participants, Imam Bakhsh alleged that his son Ahsanullah was tortured to death by some police officials who often misused their authority and powers. He said that he was told that his son had committed suicide in the lockup which was unbelievable.

“I and my two other sons were called to the police station where Ahsanullah was held for interrogation [in a murder case] and the next day he was killed in the custody,” Imam Bakhsh said. He said that his son did not suffer from any mental illness and had surrendered to police to prove his innocence in connection with the murder case. He called upon the authorities concerned to constitute an unbiased inquiry committee and initiate a fair inquiry in his son’s death.

Meanwhile, Kharan District Police Officer Laal Jan Baloch told Dawn that the body of Ahsanullah had been sent to the Civil Hospital, Quetta, for post-mortem to ascertain the cause of his death.
