OKARA: Two men were buried alive on Wednesday when a building suddenly collapsed while digging was under way on a piece of adjacent land on MA Jinnah Road.

An excavator was digging a plot for construction of a basement, but a small adjacent building on the eastern side collapsed, trapping two young workers of a herbal medicine office under the debris.

The workers were identified as Muhammad Ahmad Zafar, 23, of the Zafar Colony and Sohail Nazir, 24, of village 22/4L.

Rescue 1122, municipal corporation (MC) and police rushed to the spot, cleared the debris and recovered the two bodies after at least three hours. The bodies were shifted to the City DHQ hospital for post-mortem.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Nadeem Afzaal, City Station House Officer Tariq Awan and MC Chief Officer Fida Iftikhar Mir supervised the rescue activities.

The MC did not have a crane to meet such incidents. Philanthropist Fayyaz Zafar arranged a private crane that removed the debris.

RAPIST HELD: A man was allegedly arrested for raping a three-year-old girl in Guddar Malkana village in Mandi Ahmadabad.

The first information report registered on the application of the girl’s father stated that a boy from the village took his daughter to his house, raped her and escaped when other villagers rushed to the spot on hearing her hue and cry.

Mandi Ahmadabad police registered a case under Section 376 of the PPC and put the suspect behind bars.
