ATM robber whose video went viral dies in police custody in Rahim Yar Khan

A man from Gujranwala, whose video of robbing an ATM went viral owing to his antics, died early on Sunday while in police custody.
The man identified as Salahuddin Ayubi of Gujranwala's Kamonkay district was arrested on Friday. According to the district police officer's spokesperson Zeeshan Randhawa, Ayubi was behaving like a "mad man" in lockup when he suddenly became unwell. He said that the man was unconscious when he was shifted to the emergency ward of Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital where doctors confirmed his death.
As per Randhawa, Ayubi was dead when he was brought to the hospital. According to the focal person for the hospital, the director of the emergency ward, Dr Burhan Mustafa, could not comment on the condition in which he was brought to the hospital.
The DPO's spokesperson said that the reason for Ayubi's death would be ascertained after a post-mortem report is issued. Additionally, he said that DPO Umar Farooq Salamat had constituted an inquiry team, headed by Superintendent of Police Investigation, to look into the matter.
In a video that went viral on social media a few days ago, Ayubi was seen stealing an ATM card after breaking open a machine in Faisalabad and sticking his tongue out in jest at both the camera in the corner of the booth and the one installed in the machine itself.
On Friday, he once again entered an ATM booth — this time in Rahim Yar Khan — and was in the process of breaking the machine's exterior when he was caught red-handed by other customers. The incident occurred on Shahi road at Habib Bank Limited.
A case was registered against the suspect under Sections 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 454 (lurking house trespass or house-breaking in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) and 380 (theft in dwelling, house, etc) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

This incident is a typical case how ordinary people are treated by police for petty crimes, and where as corrupt and convicted politicians are treated like a VIP prisioners. Indicating double standards for rich and ordinary people are treated like second class citizens - we have change this system where all are treated equally and fairly.

From the video, it is clear that he was not a robber. The ATM machine captured his card and his open the machine and took back his card. There was not robbery shown.

Certainly he was not normal. Instead giving him medical treatment, he seems to be given thrash by police in custody. The sudden death of quite healthy strong man is questionable. Very sad.

It’s nothing but a blatant murder of an individual as I’d evident from the statement of the chief doctor of the hospital that he can not comment on the condition of Ayyubi he was brought in. Just this statement speaks volumes,
Ayubi had allegedly committed a crime. Should have been prosecuted & punished, if proven guilty, not murdered.

Pathetic. Looking at descriptions of sections 411, 427, 454 & 380 of penal code applied to the deceased, one gets bewildered to know that none of this 18th century penal code sections corresponds to the committed crime. One gets flabbergasted that with this colonial era criminal code in vogue, how does our police deals with criminal cases of 21st century which finds no mention in their code? This is the reason that most of our white collar crimes are being dragged on endlessly in court proceeding which eventually result in acquittals of such criminal. In most of these cases, the culprits whether caught red handed or otherwise are tortured inhumanly to obtain a confession.
Realistically speaking, we urgently need police reforms which apart from including a complete rewriting of penal code, must also focus upon training our cops on modern techniques of criminal interrogations as well forensic investigation process, unfortunately remaining in the back burner for all practical reasons.

On first place he was not a thief even.. the Atm machine's time shows that he was in there around 19 past 9 and atm machine was working fine. The man who is shown first in the video has come at 31 past 9. 12 mins after salahuddin had gone and at that time machine is in off condition. How come people have alleged salahuddin as thief he come earlier in actual video and has taken his own card. Just to dramatize our media has played a very important role in murder of this innocent chap. Pure shame of Media and then the investigators who over looked this simple but important detail.. Shame..
