KARACHI: Dengue fever has claimed another life in Karachi, taking the death toll from this mosquito-borne disease to five since Jan 1.

Spokesman Prevention and Control Programme of Dengue (PCPD) Sindh said a 20-year-old man, Talha Khalid Arain, resident of Saima Square, district East, was brought to the Aga Khan Hospital (AKU) a week ago with dengue fever and died during treatment.

The reason of admission and diagnoses were dengue shock syndrome, acute liver failure, septic shock and others. A total of five people have died from dengue fever this year so far out of which three were female and two male.

Eighty more dengue fever cases were reported in the city in a week, taking the reported cases to 1,152 since Jan 1.

According to the weekly report issued by PCPD Sindh, at least 81 more dengue fever cases were detected across Sindh in a week, out of which 80 were reported in Karachi and one in another district.

Programme manager, PCPD Sindh, Dr Mehmood Iqbal, admitted that dengue cases had been increasing in Karachi following heavy rains and added that the PCPD had started fumigation in high-risk areas to prevent citizens from catching dengue fever.
