SAHIWAL: A labourer was buried alive and another critically injured when a century-old well they were digging bricks out of collapsed in Bunga Hayat village, Pakpattan tehsil on Saturday afternoon.

Rescue 1122 personnel shifted the injured labourer to Bunga Hayat Rural Health Centre. Rescuers took two and a half hours to recover the body of the labourer using heavy machinery. Villagers, youth and other labourers helped the rescuers in the operation.

A villager had to dig a well for installing a turbine. Instead of getting new bricks for the boundary wall of the well, he asked labourers to dig out bricks from a 150-year-old well on his land.

Witnesses said the labourers were digging out the bricks from the 60-foot-deep well when its wall suddenly collapsed.

Muhammad Younas, 35, was buried alive because he was 50 feet inside the well, while his co-worker, Muhammad Asghar, 30, was critically injured.
