NEW YORK: Far East scientists were in the news last week. Dr. Choh Hao Li, working with Dr. Herbert M. Evans at the University of California, extracted purified ‘growth hormone’ from the pituitary gland of cattle.

At New York University, Dr. Choh Tui, First Vice-President of the American Bureau for Medical Aid to China, originated a method of reinjecting red blood cells into the veins of blood donors so that donations can be made as often as every week without harmful effects. The interval used to be eight weeks.

Drs. Choh and Evans are among the greatest living authorities on the glandular action of the human body. Dr. Choh previously had purified three of the six hormones secreted by the pituitary gland — which is often called the “master gland” because it controls the action of other glands of the body.

Dr. Choh, who was one of the first to set up a “blood bank” in this country, developed a method that would revolutionise blood banks worldwide. In collaboration with Dr. A.M. Wright of New York University … he proved by experiments that when red blood cells are reinjected into a donor’s veins he can give blood every week without harmful consequences.
